FLAHERTIANA WORKSHOP PRESENTS THE BEST DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKERS’ MASTER CLASSES

IDFF “Flahertiana” is not only the Competition Programs. It also includes an educational project FLAHERTIANA WORKSHOP which will hold 11 master classes. Here are the most notable of them.

On September, 18 at 14:00 Cornelia Klauss, dramaturge and Member of the Selection Committee of DOK Leipzig, will answer the question: “What happens when the reality meets animation?” The lecture will be about the special artistic forms of AnimaDoc – a combination of documentary film and animation. The meeting is organized under support of the IDFF DOK Leipzig and the Goethe-Institut. The directors and student filmmakers will learn about the peculiarities of the DOK Leipzig documentary film selection process. It also will be interesting to the wide audience to know about this unusual combination of visual genres.

The same day of September, 18 at 16:00 the workshop of Sergey Miroshnichenko, the International Jury Member, one of the main contemporary documentary filmmakers, awarded with Emmy and State Prize of the Russian Federation, will take place. The director will share his experience of multiple camera shooting sporting events in extreme conditions. The listeners of this lecture will learn how the unique “Rings of the World”, film about the Sochi Olympics was shot.

The workshop of Doug Block, the International Jury President, will have his workshop on September, 21 at 15:00. His topic is the development of the personal documentary genre in the USA. Doug Block will share his experience talk about his work on the new film. American filmmaker will show how he managed to navigate the tricky situation of making very personal films about his family and getting them out to a wide audience. The workshop is organized under support of the Consulate General of the United States of America in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

On September, 22 at 16:00 Polish producer and filmmaker Krzysztof Kopczynski will tell about the dominant principles of this game each filmmaker have to play if they want to screen their films in Europe. Kopczynski has produced more than 150 audiovisual works which won more than 140 festival awards. The talk will be based on Krzysztof’s experience of film production including “The Dybbuk: A Tale of Wandering Souls” that will be screened at the festival. The workshop is organized under support of Polish Institute in Moscow.

The 23rd of September is noted by the workshop of Jerzy Sladkowski. At 13:00 the acknowledged documentary filmmaker will tell how to construct a storyline in the documentary cinema and will illustrate his ideas with the episodes of his future film. Sladkowski is truly the citizen of the world - born in Poland he lives in Sweden, and his recent film “Don Juan” he shot in Russia. “Don Juan” won numerous prizes including the Grand Prix at the main documentary film festival IDFA. And in Perm, it will open “Flahertiana-2016”. The meeting with Sladkowski is organized under support of the Embassy of Sweden in Moscow and Swedish Film Institute.

FLAHERTIANA WORKSHOP also holds master classes of Russian filmmakers. To all the lectures the entrance is free.
