Flahertiana reveals two truths of the Great Terror

A special screening of the film “Red Soul” will take place at Flahertiana. It is a film about the time that still causes people to argue in different countries – the period of Stalinism. The documentary will be presented by the Dutch filmmaker Jessica Gorter and the producer of the film Oksana Maksimchuk.

The premiere of “Red Soul” was at the world’s largest documentary film festival in Amsterdam. The director examines the views of Stalinists and anti-Stalinists on the events of the Great Terror and modernity: why do many still revere Stalin, despite the fact that repressions have affected almost every family? This film is not just a historical chronicle – those are personal stories of people who reveal their souls, red from blood, pain and fear. The past in this picture is connected with the present and the future.

Jessica Gorter has been coming to Russia for more than 20 years and has shot here films about perestroika and the blockade of Leningrad. She believes that there is no undeniable truth, so her work is a meticulously folded mosaic of portraits where the views of different sides exist together.

In the film, the director does not estimate anyone, the audience will be able to place the accents in the discussion after watching “Red Soul” together with the author. In addition, Jessica Gorter will hold a workshop “Which Story Do You Want to Tell?” at Flahertiana on how to make a film out of an idea.

The screening is organized under support of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Russia.
