"Flahertiana-2020" Announces the International Competition Program
Flahertiana presents the program of the International Competition. The selection committee received over a thousand applications, and also studied the programs of friendly festivals. As a result, 14 best films were selected – many of them have already received prizes at film festivals in the Netherlands, Canada, Poland and other countries around the world.
As always, the films of the 20th festival amaze with the degree of closeness to the heroes and expand our understanding of the world. Have you ever wondered, for example, who makes toys for Christmas trees? Meet the Chinese people who work at Christmas decorations factories in the film Merry Christmas, Yiwu. Almost the opposite of honest workers with communist ideals is the majestic Roni from King of the Cruise. Together with director Sophie Dros, we will try to understand what stands behind his daily masquerade and ostentatious luxury. Another complex and poignant story is Love Child about Leila and Sahand who escape from Iran where they can be executed for infidelity. Will they be able to establish a new life in a foreign country, away from friends and family, and how can they explain everything to their little child?
Despite the fact that there are two films from Russian directors in the International Competition, authors from other countries also made an attempt to understand Russia through people. One of them is the director Jerzy Sładkowski, already familiar to the audience of Flahertiana with his film Bitter Love. It is the collection of portraits of river cruise guests on the background of Volga landscapes. Swiss Gabriel Tejedor's Kombinat is an observation of three families of workers at a steel factory in Magnitogorsk. Another long-awaited premiere of Flahertiana is School of Seduction, about specific courses for women and how they affect their lives. Alina Rudnitskaya has been filming her heroines for ten years.
We remind you that all the films of the competitions will be available online. The festival events are supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Perm Krai and the Ministry of Culture of the RF.
The winner of the International Competition will receive the Golden Nanook and money prize. The jury will also select the best films in the nominations For the Original Artistic Solution and For the Discovery of New Subjects and New Heroes.
