The Arctic expedition was planned by Sakari Pjalsi in late 1916, but he could set out for it in April 1917. He was eager to film the Stone Age culture revived to life. That is how he chose the Chukchi people to be filmed. The film director left Helsinki for Vladivostok by train. Then he changed for a Russian trawler setting out for the North. He spent all summer there, but in autumn he came back to Vladivostok where he had to stay till 1919. The film was finally edited in 1921-22. When released, it was an enormous success. For the next expeditin to be financed, S. Pjalsi got a bank loan with both his film was forgotten about. It was only in 1976, when the film was discovered and restored.
