This documentary is about the siege of Leningrad during the Second World War. This film is about life giving up in blockade Leningrad, and giving way to death. It is about war where there are no winners, where everyone loses. There are no words, and no music in the film, only sounds and pictures of slowly dying city and suffering people.

Sergei Loznitsa, Sergei Gelver

was born in 1964 in the city of Baranovichi, in Belarus. In 1987 he graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Applied Mathematics. He then entered feature film directing workshop of Nana Djordjadze, Irakli Kvirikadze and Andrey Sirenko in VGIK (Gerasimov Institute of Cinematograpgy, Moscow), from which he graduated with honours in 1996.
