Sweetgrass (0+)

France, UK, USA, 2009, colour, 101 min.
Directors: Ilisa Barbash , Lucien Castaing-Taylor
An unsentimental elegy to the American West, “Sweetgrass” follows the last sheepherders to trail their flocks up into Montana's Beartooth mountains for summer pasture.
Without commentary, this astonishingly beautiful yet unsparing non-fiction film reveals a world in which nature and culture, animals and humans, climate and landscape, and vulnerability and violence are all intimately meshed.

Ilisa Barbash

Lucien Castaing-Taylor

Lucien Castaing-Taylor

was born in 1966 and grew up in Liverpool, UK. An anthropologist, filmmaker, and artist, he divides his time between New England and the French Pyrenees. Working in Montana since 2001, he has used film, video, and photography to evoke at once the attractions and the ambivalence of the pastoral. Various of his related video and photographic works have been exhibited at Marian Goodman Gallery in 2007, and at the Amie and Tony James Gallery in 2008. Earlier works (co-directed with Barbash) include Made in USA (1990), a film about sweatshops and child labor in the Los Angeles garment industry, and In and Out of Africa (1992), a video about authenticity, taste, and racial politics in the transnational African art market. He is currently a professor in Visual & Environmental Studies and in Anthropology at Harvard University, where he is Director of the new Sensory Ethnography Lab.
