Black Island (0+)

Belgium, 1994, colour, min.
Director: Rob Rombout
Some 60,000 people live off-shore in the North Sea at present, shut off from the rest of the world, left to fend for themselves in a hostile environment. 80 men and women work together on the McClintock drilling platform. Seven days a week in cramped conditions which make any private life practically impossible. The film traces the behaviour inside the group, illustrating the group dynamics not only by dialogue but also by showing the gestures and facial expressions of its members. The worst problem they face is coping with change between "normal" life and the periods of isolation. But, in a time of economic crisis when fears of unemployment hang over the lives of crew and family, they hardly have a choice.
