Flahertiana audiences will see this year’s Emmy nominee

Traditionally, a special event of Flahertiana is the program Jury Members’ Films. This time the film row includes newly Emmy nominated film, brief retrospective of Armen Khachatryan, new film of Aleksei Vakhrushev on the sea hunters of Chukotka, a story of the downfall of world-famous Nokia company, memento mori by Elena Laskari, and others.

The Jury President, Michael Collins will present his two resonant films: just nominated for Emmy 2018 “Almost Sunrise” about the Iraq veterans struggling with depression and “Give Up Tomorrow” disclosing the corruption in Philippines also nominated for Emmy Award earlier.

Another film on the topic under discussion: "Nokia Mobile – We Were Connecting People” which will be presented by producer Pertti Veijalainen. In it, inventors and engineers share their vision of the causes of the decline of the world-famous company that brought Finland out of crisis.

The retrospective of Armen Khachatryan will cover five famous films of the master from 2006 to 2012 which received the main prizes at festivals of different countries. The audience will see pictures of the civil war in Syria, an original Armenian artist, a homeless girl and three attempts to find happiness in faith, hope and love.

For the first time, the general public will see Aleksei Vakhrushev's film “The Book of the Sea” (it was shown just once to a local audience in Anadyr). This is an unusual combination of a documentary about the life of sea hunters and animation.

Viewers of Flahertiana have already seen some of the films by the director and jury member of the National Competition Elena Laskari ("Valenki", "Tatyana and Sons", "Del And His Predel") but "Ceremony" has never been on the screens of the Perm festival. It is about one of the main ceremonies of life — a funeral: who accompanies on the last journey, will there be music, what will the coffin be like? This is what the film's main character thinks about. The reason to think about life and death this film will be for the audience as well.

And two films that won awards at different festivals including Flahertiana will be presented by Vladimir Golovnev: "Two Childhoods" about the reverse side of patriotism and "The Curtain" ("Silver Nanook") about other problems of Russian life on the example of the theatre of the small Ural city of Irbit.

After the screenings, the directors will tell about how the films were made and answer questions. The audience will be able to continue сommunicating with them during their time at Flahertiana Workshop. The schedule of films and master classes will be announced later.

The visit of Michael Collins is organized with the support of the US Consulate General in Yekaterinburg. The visit of Armen Khachatryan will be held with the assistance of the Perm Krai Center of Armenian Culture.
