Alexander Deryabin

Film historian

Alexander Deryabin is a film historian specializing in the national non-fiction cinema and film archives. Born in 1971 in Kudimkar. In 1994 graduated from VGIV as scriptwriter-film historian. In 1994-2001 worked as a researcher and main specialist of the finding aid in Russian State Film and Photo Archive. In 2000-2004 – an editor of the theoretical and historical magazine “Kinovedcheskiye zapiski” (Film Study Notes). In 2002-2014 worked as a staff scientist of the National Research Institute of Cinematography. Worked as a TV scriptwriter, author and narrator of the programs on documentary cinema. Wrote more than 100 articles and publications in various reviews and digests.

Since 1995 he was a consultant on the newsreel of more than 80 documnetary films and tv-programs (including “Sergey Eisenstein. Autobiography” by O. Kovalov, “Moscow of Golden Cupolas” by A. Khanyutin, “Hunting the Angel or Four Loves of the Poet and Prophet” by A. Osipov, tv-series “Russian Empire” by L. Parfyonov).

Awarded with the Medal of Honour of the Pordenone Silent Film Festival  («Le Giornate del Cinema Muto», Italy, 2004) and with prizes of the “Belye Stolby”  Festival of Archive Cinema (in 2006, 2011, 2014) as the Best Film Historian of the year.
